Public CBD is a new contemporary and stylish café with an interestingly unique menu, located on Franklin Street in the city. Whether you’re dining in for breakfast, lunch or just popping in for a quick take away coffee with a freshly baked pastry, Public has something to suit everyone. After hearing the buzz around town about one of Adelaide’s newly opened hot spots, Everything Adelaide was excited to experience the taste of Public for ourselves.
As soon as I arrived I fell in love with the interior and the whole atmosphere. Within, the interior design has an industrial and modern look to it. I especially loved the large comfy booths available around to enjoy your meal with friends. The area is quite spacious and the floor to ceiling windows allows the beautiful, natural sunlight to enter, which adds to the relaxed yet stylish environment.
Unlike other standard cafés, Public has four different menus, only making the decision of choosing what to order all the more exciting and difficult! Monday through to Thursday consists of the breakfast menu until 11:30am followed by the kitchen menu until end of day. Fridays also include both the breakfast and kitchen menu along with the ‘Wine Down’ menu is that’s introduced at 3pm. This additional menu incorporates a wide variety of exclusive ‘finger and fork’ food, something small but satisfying for a Friday afternoon. When it comes to weekends there is also a brunch menu available from 8am to 2pm. Considering Public CBD is quite above average in comparison to the regular café, the pricing is also slightly above average for a main meal. Although, it’s certainly worth the money.
I decided to order the Wagyu Beef Burger with pickles, bacon and cheese served with a side of smashed desiree potatoes. The juicy beef patty was served on a fresh brioche bun that surprisingly wasn’t greasy! At previous occasions I’ve found brioche buns to be too greasy for my liking, so I was very happy to be enjoying a grease free burger for once! The burger itself was extremely tasty and it was evident the produce used within the burger was nice and fresh. The bacon was crispy and cooked to perfection, which complemented the overall burger well.
The side of smashed desiree potatoes was an fascinating twist to your average side of chips. The potatoes had quite a strong taste to them, which was expected as they were garnished with garlic, fennel salt and citrus. They were definitely an interesting component of the dish but I would have preferred the option of smashed potatoes or just your average steak cut chips.
All staff members were lovely and attentive, which complemented the wonderful dining experience. There is limited on street parking available on Franklin Street, but the location is a great go-to place if you work within walking distance. Public CBD would be the perfect place to wine down and have a drink or two on a Friday night to bring in the weekend with friends. Everything Adelaide will definitely need to return to Public CBD to check out their breakfast, brunch and Friday afternoon menu, as we are confident it will not disappoint!
